Smite is a third-person multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game developed and published by Hi-Rez Studios.
Battle for Titan
The game pits two teams of five players against each other in attempt to destroy the enemy's base, using abilities and team tactics against other player-controlled characters and non-player-controlled minions.
At the start of each match players are placed in two separated bases at opposite ends of the map, connected by three lanes (Left, Middle and Right), each protected by two towers and a Phoenix (a more powerful version of a tower). The main objective is to dismantle the enemy’s towers and destroy their Titan, while preventing them from doing the same to you.
Conquering eSports
Since the project’s inception Smite was developed with eSports in mind. In 2015 Hi-Rez Studios hosted the first Smite World Championship. It saw teams from North America, South America, Europe and China compete for a $2.6 million prize pool. At the time it was the third-highest prize pool in eSports, behind only the third and fourth installments of Dota 2’s The International.
For 2016 Hi-Rez Studios placed a cap on the prize pool for the Smite World Championships at $1 million. The decision was made in order to pay out more at multiple tournaments throughout the year instead of paying out all prize money at a single event.
